Max Usable Temp of A286 (1.4980) Bolts

Q: I am designing an engine unit and am considering using 1.4980 stud bolts and nuts at elevated temperature. What is the maximum working temperature for stud bolts made of 1.4980 (A-286)?

A: A286/Alloy 660 or 1.4980 fasteners are made of a stainless steel alloy which contains iron, nickel, and chromium. 1.4980 bolts offer high strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures in age hardened condition. In general 1.4980 bolts can be used from room temperature up to 700 deg. C (1300 deg F)

As for all metals, the material strength for 1.4980 fasteners, will reduce when temperature increases. At 700 deg C the strength of 1.4980 will typically be 40% lower compared to room temperature. The following charts can help you better understand the strength of 1.4980/A286 bolts at different temperatures.
