Flat Head Socket Cap Screw Angles

Q: Can you make a 100 deg flat head, with a hex socket driver?
A: Yes this screw can be produced but there are some significant trade-offs that need to be realized.
Though a hex socket driver is a typical driver in an 82 deg flat head screw, in this instance for a 100 deg flat head there will be mechanical trade-offs. Because of the sharper angle of the 100 deg flat head, in combination with a hex socket driver,  the head will be inherently weak – as there is just not enough material between the head and the shank.  As a result,  the fastener will have a weak head and will be more likely to “pop off” when torquing or under significant load.  If a hex driver is required, this can be minimized by having a shallower driver and/or a smaller hex driver, but this design still will be relatively weak compared to other designs and can be more likely to strip when installing.  If the design flexibility exists, a slotted or phillips driver will be recommended to avoid these issues.
