Q: I am looking for metric heavy hex bolts for a high temperature structural application that will be running at about 500C. A325M and A490M cannot be used, so I would like to use A193M B16 Heavy Hex Bolt, which could be a good solution. The problem is that I can’t find a suitable ASME standard that describes metric A193M Heavy Hex Bolts dimensions. Can you help me?
A: The ASTM bolt specifications can be restrictive from a materials point of view especially if you would like to use more specialty materials for an application. In this case, it is best to spit the specification into separate material and dimensional specs.
Another alternative for high temperature bolting is to consider ASTM A453 (A286). This specs include both dimensional and mechanical properties that might work for you application.
