Q: I’m looking for polymer that can withstand around 400F for a high temperature sterilization process in a pharmaceutical application. In addition, I also need the polymer to meet FDA and USDA purity standards. Is this possible with Torlon screws.
A: Torlon screws are a good high temperature polymer that are usable to 525F. They are known for flame resistance, as well as metal-like coefficient of linear thermal expansion. The issue with Torlon in your situation is that it does not meet USDA or FDA purity standards. So it probably won’t be a good fit.
Here I would suggest using a PEEK screw. PEEK is usable to 500F and is approved for use by the FDA, USDA and 3A Dairy. In addition, medical grades of PEEK screws are also available. This would probably be a better fit for you.
